There are 2 ways to stand and present your dog. A Free-stand and a Stack.
A free-stand is where your dog stands itself, with its attention on the handler aided with food or a toy. This is also known as Baiting your Dog.
A stack is where the handler places the dogs feet in the correct position and holds the dog in the stand.
I believe that all dogs should learn how to free-stand. Even if you then present your dog kneeling down or holding its tail or head in the correct position. If your dog walks into the stand naturally, then you have to move less feet and the presentation of your dog looks more polished.
Judges may ask you to Free-stand your dog after moving. A judge can see your dogs natural conformation in a free-stand. Whereas a good handler can hide a dogs faults when stacking.
This video shows me teaching my 4 month old Miniature Schnauzer puppies how to free-stand using their dinner as a reward. This is done everyday and only takes a couple of minutes. The end result is shown with my older dog, Max. 'Stand' and 'Wait'.
This video shows 3 breeds that are traditionally stacked, being taught to free-stand and then transition into the stacked position for presentation to the judge. This is a much quicker way of standing your dog, it looks tidier and more professional.
